  A good textbook that highlights money saving operations procedures~

  If you are employed with a large company, then there is probably some sort of money saving lean infrastructure protocol in place. If not, then this might be a good way to explore some money saving options. If you are expanding a smaller business, or even in a small retail operation, then there is some quality information contained in this text.

  And don’t mistake it, this is a textbook. The layout, design, style, and writing are all geared towards a work course style format. Being such, it is often dry and unengaging. But the information is well documented and easily accessible. Granted, a lot of these protocols are common sense, but it’s nice to get the numbers that are the proof, rather than looking at the bigger picture and guessing what seems the right direction.

  Basically the money saving steps are to save on the supply chain wherever you can. If you look at a company like Amazon for example, you can see the epitome of lean supply chain (regional warehouses, third party vendors, shipment tracking, order bundling, etc…). If it looks like it saves on fuel and transportation cost, then it’s probably in the company’s best interest.

  I feel like there is a small niche market for a text such as this. I see it appealing to operations managers, purchasers, suppliers, and regional managers of mid to large size companies with multi-city or multi-state presence. I could definitely see it being used in an upper level business course as a recommended reading. Looking at you Wharton School.

  Going lean leads to going green

  The fundamental premise of this book is a simple one that is often overshadowed by political posturing and wrangling. That premise is that going green is a natural business tactic, for in general the end result is the saving of money for the organization. When used to refer to business, “lean” generally means the tightening of operations, reducing costs and improving efficiency, and that will in most cases lead to an improvement of the bottom line.
  The supply chain is the sequence of actors and events that sequentially execute to bring a product from the point where it is the form of unprocessed raw materials to where it moves out the door as a sale. What Palevich does in this book is set down three types of supply chains. They are:

  *) Collaborative supply chain
  *) External supply chain
  *) Internal supply chain

  For each of these chains, Palevich describes the general form that it has and the points where efficiency improvements can be made. Each of these points is then examined in greater detail with reasonable computations regarding what level of improvements can be seen. The fact that Palevich is so conservative in the estimates of the savings is the most impressive feature of the book. In general, they are in the more reasonable range of 2-4% instead of the ridiculous claims made by more unrealistic proponents.
  Computations and charts are used throughout the book to make the points regarding the potential savings, in general the point is that “going lean leads to going green.” While there may be a few managers that will not find applicable improvements in this book, the majority of people will find at least the germ of the tactic that they can apply to improve the overall efficiency of their organization.

  Written Like a Textbook

  In this book Robert Palevich explains how organizations can go lean in their supply chain while being green at the same time. If you streamline your supply chain so that you’re using less fuel, your cars are on the highways less, thus You’re green. Actually, I see his point, less fuel, means less pollution and if your trucks spend less time on the roads, the government spends less time, money and energy repairing them. This book if full of examples like that.

  However, the book is written like a textbook and is kind of dry and hard to get into because of the stilted writing. That being said, the information can both save a large retail operation a lot of money, while allowing it to go green, so it’s a win win for everybody, the company saves money and Earth breathes a little easier.

  Much improved over earlier models

  Though I’ve been running it for slightly under two months, I am extremely pleased with all aspects of operation. Sure, compared to the run of the mill American machines, it is costlier, slower, and has a smaller load capacity, but it fits my space perfectly, and has really been a wonderful machine. I’ve owned similar Bosch products for years (for the same reason of limited space,) and the improvement in the current model is truly amazing. For my personal needs, this was the best machine on the market. I recommend it wholeheartedly. (If you plan on stacking a dryer upon it, you’ll more or less be limited to purchasing the matching Bosch dryer because AC power supply most ideally comes from the dryer, and the matching dryer unit stacks perfectly upon this washer.) The manufacturer does not STRESS STRONGLY ENOUGH the importance of removing the four (4) packing bolts/screws from the back of the washer. Those steps are easily overlooked. MAKE CERTAIN you have removed four (4) very long bolts/screws from the back of the washer BEFORE you ever turn it on. Search until you find them!!! You can easily install the machine yourself (with your wife or husband, your friend, your teen-ager, etc.,) if you take your time, level judiciously, have a small step ladder handy, in case you’re stacking the dryer atop the washer, etc.) However, if your deal includes installation, that’s probably worth $50-$100. I ordered through Amazon, and the delivery was extremely speedy; but then, I order almost everything I buy through Amazon… so I was not surprised by the good service.

  Very happy with this machine. It replaced an old ultra compact (CREDA) which was 15 years old. This machine is extremely quiet, washes great and is easy to operate. I am not a heavy commercial-like household and laundry needs are simple. I use Meyers detergents only and a little dry non chlorine “bleach” in the wash on whites and everything is done well. I also make sure to leave the door open after doing loads since mold would be unavoidable given the tight door seal without drying the unit out. All in all I’m very pleased with this unit.

  Great but…

  This machine does an excellent job of washing clothes. It is quiet, efficient and versatile. It holds way more clothing than you would think. The only complaint that I have is that the door seal gets mildew stained and smelly within weeks, and eventually the rubber rots and begins to leak. Mine is not yet two years old and I am replacing the seal, having lived for 18 months with the smell and unsightly appearance of the mildew. I tried wiping it with bleach, until that bleached out my black shirts! Too bad, I wish they had a solution to this problem.
